‘Shrek 5’: Everything We Know About the Upcoming Film

It might still be two years away from hitting movie screens, but people are already very excited by the news we are getting a Shrek 5.

The animated classic Shrek was released in 2001 and was beloved for turning fairy tale tropes on their head through the titular ogre voiced by Austin Powers star Mike Myers. Shrek was a huge success and spawned the 2004 sequel Shrek 2, 2007’s Shrek the Third and 2010’s Shrek Forever After.

Other spin-offs included Puss in Boots and Puss in Boots: The Last Wish, following Antonio Banderas’ eponymous cat character. It isn’t yet known if he’s returning for Shrek 5.

The fifth Shrek movie will be the first of the franchise in 16 years when it premieres at cinemas on July 1, 2026. While a plot for the film has yet to be released, it has been revealed that along with Myers, Eddie Murphy will be returning as Shrek’s sidekick Donkey and Cameron Diaz as Princess Fiona.

Dreamworks Animation announced the return of the beloved animation and stars in a post on X, formerly Twitter, earlier this month.

“Not too Far, Far Away… Shrek 5 is coming to theatres on July 1 2026 with Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy, and Cameron Diaz,” it wrote.

Work has already begun on Shrek 5, according to Murphy, who said things got moving “months ago.” He also hinted that Donkey might even get his own spin-off film.

“I recorded the first act, and we’ll be doing it this year, we’ll finish it up,” he said in an interview with Collider last month. “Shrek is coming out and Donkey’s gonna have his own movie.”

Murphy has been speaking about returning to the Shrek universe for a while and in January 2023 proclaimed he wanted a spin-off for Donkey.

“If [DreamWorks] ever came with another Shrek, I’d do it in two seconds. I love Donkey. They did Puss in Boots movies. I was like, ‘They should have done a Donkey movie.’ Donkey is funnier than Puss in Boots. I mean, I love Puss in Boots, but he ain’t funny as the Donkey,” Murphy told ETalkat the time.

Walt Dohrn is directing Shrek 5, and along with his filmmaking talents, also lent his voice as an actor in Shrek Forever After and voiced multiple characters in Shrek the Third.

Dohrn has directed other Dreamworks movies, including all three Trolls pictures.

Writing the screenplay is Michael McCullers, who worked with Myers on the Austin Powers movies and has written other films for Dreamworks.

The first Shrek grossed $487 million at the global box office and won the first Academy Award for best animated feature.
